Concord businessman Rik Yeames and his Eclipse Mobile were at the special Eclipse Programming for Libraries training in Hooksett.
DANVILLE —It's still almost a year away but we are already excited and getting ready for the rare total solar eclipse that will occur on April 8, 2024. This month Carolyn Killian attended a workshop lead by Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries (SEAL) which prepares libraries to offer educational and entertaining programs about the eclipse, space, and science.
SEAL has already delivered over three million eclipse glasses to libraries across the country and conducted hundreds of workshops. We have ordered 2,000 glasses.
Why all the excitement? This will be the first total solar eclipse seen in NH since 1959 and the third ever to be seen by NH residents. While the entire state will not see a total eclipse much of it, including Danville, will see a deep partial eclipse with over 90% of the sun covered by the moon's shadow. In Danville, gazers will see a sun that is 94.4% covered leaving a sliver of sun likely to turn red or orange.
A reasonable drive to parts of northern NH, Vermont, Maine and NY will place enthusiasts within the "zone of totality." The eerie darkness and red moon that can occur during the minutes of a total eclipse are a photographer's dream. Special solar filters are essential for photographing even a partial eclipse.
Eclipses are a wonderful opportunity to teach children, teens and adults about science, space and astrology.
We will be offering a series of programs for all ages leading up to the eclipse including STEM activities, a sun telescope program, an eclipse photography workshop and more.
Meals on Wheels Flower Program for Kids
This year our Summer Reading Program theme is All Together Now: a Summer of Kindness and Community. On Mon., June 26 at 2 p.m. children of all ages are invited to make craft flowers which will be delivered, along with a note from the creators to Danville residents who will receive them in their July 4th Meals on Wheels delivery.
Those who can't make it that day can drop by any time that week to create flowers and write "kindness notes."
No registration required.
